Tally Marks
  • Tally marks can be used for counting.
  • The count can be updated without erasing what was written before.
  • They work best for smaller numbers

How to Use Tally Marks

  • Tally marks are placed in groups of five or less.
  • Counts 1 through 4 are up and down lines that are next to each other.
  • The fifth count is indicated by a diagonal mark which is made across the four up and down marks.
  • This process is repeated for the next counts.
  • The total count can be determined by counting by five for each whole group and then counting by ones for any additional marks.
